Our First Cooking Class...

I plan on adding meaning and depth to the fun so we actually started working on this recipe last week. Monday was our first, hands on, cooking class, but we have been working on this recipe for a week  in Math. I gave them measurement conversion charts, so our first step was to evaluate the recipe, learn the conversion charts - cups and spoons to mg or ml - and then we convert the recipe.  We went from cups and teaspoons to mg, or as I like to say, they went from the unknown to the understandable. It was tricky in the beginning but they soon got a grip of what they were supposed to do.

Today, we got our hands on the kitchen and put last week´s work on paper into a delicous cookie!  We had fun, got our hands dirty and our mouths full.  The kids did a wonderful job keeping clean and helping around.  I think I might have discovered a few hidden talents in the process as well!

If you are curious about our recipe, here it goes:

INGREDIENTS

·         2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
·         1/2 teaspoon baking soda
·         1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
·         1/2 cup granulated sugar
·         1 cup packed light-brown sugar
·         1 teaspoon salt

·         2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
·         2 large eggs
·         2 cups (about 12 ounces) semisweet and/or milk chocolate chips

STEP 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and baking soda; set aside.

STEP 2

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the butter with both sugars; beat on medium speed until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low; add the salt, vanilla, and eggs. Beat until well mixed, about 1 minute. Add flour mixture; mix until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.

STEP 3
Drop heaping tablespoon-size balls of dough about 2 inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.

STEP 4
Bake until cookies are golden around the edges, but still soft in the center, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven, and let cool on baking sheet 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack, and let cool completely. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature up to 1 week.

VALENTINE´S DAY KICKBALL

"Kickball is a playground game and league game, similar to baseball, invented in the United States in the first half of the 20th century. It is similar to baseball where players kick the ball to bat it instead of using bats, making it more accessible to young children. As in baseball, teams alternate innings with one team attempting to score by having its players circle the bases and the other team in the outfield working to stop runs from being scored. Players on the batting team kick an inflated rubber ball to advance players around the bases and thus score runs. The team with the most runs after a predefined number of innings wins.
Kickball is a popular playground sport and is typically played among young, school-age children.[citation needed] The lack of both specialized equipment and highly skill-based positions (like pitcher) makes the game an accessible introduction to other sports. It is less popular among adults, who are more commonly known to play similar games like softball and baseball. "
"The game seems to afford equal enjoyment to the childrens and it gives a better understanding of the national game (Baseball), and at the same time affords them an exercise that is not too violent and is full of fun."
                                                                                                                                   (Source Wikipedia)

Today we took the time from Arts and Crafts to learn a
new game.  We had the 4th grade against the 5th
grade.
The kids took a little longer than I expected to master
the game so we had to lwave the actual plating for
another day!

Let´s not forget that today is VALENTINE´S DAY, so
we made a special card to share with a loved one.
There were some really great projects and texts!

The Week...

]

Hi people of forth and fifth grades,

this week we made a class contract, and we talk about our vacations.
We drew and described some of the places we visited on our vacations.
My teacher is very cool, my friends too. I like the week so much.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          BY GUILHERME !!

So The Year Begins...

I have been looking forward to this week for months!!

I am so happy to lead this class into the adventure that the 5th grade will represent in their lives.

We had a blast this week, we got to know each other and we started shaping our class.  We made signs designating class area for the different subjects; we decided what we are doing for P.A. and how we are learning about Living things in Science. We also created systems for water and bathroom breaks.

As I told the kids, when I look at them I don´t see boys and girls, I see young men and women and that´s how I want to treat them this year.  We must leave all the child play out of the door and learn when we need to work and when we can play because we will be doing a lot of both!!

We have started working on a interdisciplinary project so far:  A travel brochure of their own vacation experiences put together as groups.  With this I intend to elicit their curiosity about Geography and start on map skills,  We are also working on writing and editing, since we have to put our vacations into words and we have a bit of arts and crafts with drawings, scaling, decorating and designing.  It has been a lot of fun and it will be on display as soon as it is done!

Oh... the week went by fast!!
